French Chinese New Year Color by Sound
You’ve seen “color by code” activities before and this is no different in the way it works.
However, the level of critical thinking skills required is more than what the usual “coloriage magique” demands.
Kids will have to pay attention to graphemes, i.e. the way sounds are represented in print, in order to color it right and reveal the hidden image.
For example, the r-blend dr is yellow in the example below, so kids need to color the word “dragon” yellow because it contains the sound “dr”.

By following the code at the top of the page, your students will color the parts of the drawing to reveal the hidden image.
I’ve included the following sounds in this free sample: b, f, m, dr, ai, au, oi, ou, ch, eu, ien, gn, and g doux.
There are two worksheets that are perfect for independent centers and for sub plans. I’ve also included answer keys, so students can check their own work.
